Jurgen Klopp reached an agreement on the key points of a deal to become Germany head coach, the German football federation said. Klopp, 59, would replace Julian Nagelsmann in his first coaching role since leaving Liverpool in summer 2024. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and DFB Vice-President Hans-Joachim Watzke held intensive talks with Klopp in New York on 10 July 2026.
A statement from the federation said an agreement was reached on essential points of a potential contract during the constructive exchange. Talks will continue in the week beginning 13 July 2026. Both sides are confident negotiations can be concluded successfully, subject to an agreement with Klopp's current employer Red Bull.
Klopp has worked as Red Bull's head of global soccer since leaving Liverpool. A possible contract must be decided in a joint meeting of the supervisory board and shareholders' meeting of DFB GmbH und Co. KG.
Nagelsmann left after Germany's penalty shoot-out defeat to Paraguay in the World Cup last 32. The DFB confirmed his exit on 3 July 2026. Klopp has been working as a pundit on German television during the tournament.
