Justice Department Files Denaturalization Cases Against 17 Naturalized Citizens

The Department of Justice filed denaturalization actions on June 8 against 17 naturalized citizens accused of serious crimes. The individuals are from Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Charges include immigration fraud, sexual abuse of a minor, and a $36 million healthcare fraud scheme in Florida.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the department maintains a zero-tolerance policy for abuse of the naturalization process. Officials stated that citizenship obtained through concealment or willful misrepresentation can be revoked under existing Supreme Court precedent.

Between 1990 and 2017, the federal government averaged 11 such cases annually. Sen. Mazie Hirono stated the administration’s efforts are unconstitutional and target immigrant communities. Sen. Dick Durbin questioned the priority given to denaturalization amid other national challenges.

Officials said the current scale reflects a priority on enforcing laws that require lawful naturalization. They stated the policy applies equally to native-born and naturalized citizens who respect U.S. laws.
