Justin Brownlee will miss Gilas Pilipinas’ game against Australia on Monday, July 6, 2026, in Perth because of a hamstring strain and peroneal tendinopathy in his right leg along with left-knee swelling and cartilage defects, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas announced.
Brownlee, 38, played through the ailments in the previous qualifier and finished with five points during a 106-102 double-overtime loss to New Zealand on July 3 in Auckland. He had also skipped two tune-up games against New Zealand clubs before that contest.
Rappler reported that Brownlee’s season averages stand at 14.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. Without him, coach Tim Cone will rely on younger players to generate offense against an Australian team that is 5-0 in Group A with an average margin of victory of 23.8 points.
The Philippines enters the matchup with a 2-3 record after three losses in its first five games and needs additional wins to strengthen its bid for the 2027 FIBA World Cup.
