Kentucky Governor Requests Health Update from Senator McConnell

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear formally requested an update from Sen. Mitch McConnell on Wednesday about the senator's health and ability to serve. Beshear wrote that Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about McConnell's condition during a weeks-long hospitalization.

He asked McConnell to provide a direct update on his current status. McConnell, 84, has been hospitalized since June 14. Emergency medical personnel responded to an unconscious person at his home that day, according to a public EMS dispatch call reviewed by CBS News.

McConnell's office has not provided additional information about the reason for the admission or confirmed the dispatch call concerned the senator. The office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday. Beshear, a Democrat, said public officeholders have a commitment to transparency with constituents.

He added that clear communication about one's ability to serve is required. In a statement, Beshear said continued speculation is not fair to McConnell or Kentuckians and expressed hope the request would prompt a transparent response.

GOP leaders said they spoke to McConnell earlier this week. A spokeswoman for Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming stated McConnell was fully engaged and eager to return to the Senate. McConnell is not seeking reelection but has said he will serve the remainder of his term, which ends early next year.

Recent changes to Kentucky law limit the governor's role in filling a Senate vacancy and require a special election instead. Beshear vetoed the legislation in 2024, arguing his administration deserved the same authority as previous ones. The GOP-led legislature overrode the veto.
