Kiley dropped his Republican affiliation earlier this year and is now running as an Independent. He said at the time that he plans to continue caucusing with the GOP, which would allow him to keep his committee positions with the approval of party leadership. Kiley said he became an Independent because of his disgust with gerrymandering going on across the country.
Governors and legislators in a number of states, including California, are working to redraw their maps to give their party an advantage in the midterm and future elections. The newly redrawn Sixth Congressional District includes the state capital of Sacramento and is widely considered favorable for Democrats, according to the New York Times.
Kiley made a name for himself as a Republican lawmaker in California before leaving the party earlier this year.
The primary election results were projected one week after California held its primaries. m. on Election Day or postmarked by Election Day and received by county election offices by the following Tuesday.
