King Charles III will not live at Buckingham Palace after its 10-year refurbishment finishes next year. Royal officials said Thursday that the king and Queen Camilla will continue to reside at Clarence House. The palace will remain the ceremonial and operational center of the monarchy.
The decision allows greater public access, including more events and tours. The palace already receives about 700,000 visitors a year. The announcement came during a Thursday briefing on royal finances.
Charles paid 12.9 million pounds in income and capital gains taxes in the 2024-25 financial year, up from 11. This marks the first time he has disclosed his personal tax payments since becoming monarch in 2022. Prince William paid 7.
The refurbishment program began in 2017 and is scheduled for completion in 2027 at a cost of 369 million pounds. Built in the 1820s, Buckingham Palace has served as the London home of every British monarch since Queen Victoria and contains 775 rooms.
