King Charles paid 30 million pounds in tax since 2022, palace says

The palace said Thursday that King Charles has paid more than 30 million pounds in income tax since becoming monarch in 2022. His tax bill reached 11.7 million pounds in 2023-24 and 12.9 million pounds the following year. Prince William paid 8.34 million pounds in 2023-24. Both receive income from private estates including the Duchy of Lancaster and the Duchy of Cornwall.
Tax disclosure details The figures do not include breakdowns of how the tax totals were calculated. James Chalmers, keeper of the privy purse, said the system is structured in law to balance independence and accountability.
Camilla will continue living at Clarence House after the 369-million-pound refurbishment of Buckingham Palace ends. The palace will remain the ceremonial center and primary workplace, with increased public access planned.
Reactions to the release Republic CEO Graham Smith said the figures raise further questions and called for full public access to the palace year-round. Constitutional expert Craig Prescott said the disclosures respond to expectations of transparency around public funds.
Carolyn Harris, a Toronto-based royal historian, said the release is likely to prompt more questions about private investments and whether the duchies should pay corporation tax.
