Marta Kostyuk defeated Iga Swiatek 7-5, 6-1 in the fourth round of the French Open on Sunday, eliminating the four-time champion on her 25th birthday. Kostyuk, ranked 15th, reached the quarterfinals for the first time at Roland Garros. She had lost her three previous matches against Swiatek without taking a set.

An intense baseline exchange opened the first set.

Swiatek broke serve after a long rally, but Kostyuk broke back immediately. Swiatek regained the advantage before double-faulting and committing unforced errors that allowed Kostyuk to level at 5-5. Swiatek double-faulted twice more in the 12th game.

Kostyuk sealed the set with a backhand passing shot. In the second set Swiatek broke to lead 1-0, yet another double fault and additional errors let Kostyuk tie the score. Kostyuk then won the final five games.

Kostyuk extended her clay-court winning streak to 16 matches after titles in Madrid and Rouen earlier this season. "To beat such an unbelievable player who won four times here, I'd lost [three] times to her, never taken a set off her, I still cannot believe it," Kostyuk said.

Swiatek's loss means both the men's and women's singles draws at the 2026 French Open will produce new champions. Novak Djokovic, the last former men's champion remaining in the draw, exited in the third round. Kostyuk will face fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals.
