LDP and Innovation Party split on extending Diet session past July 17

Shunichi Suzuki, secretary-general of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party, said Sunday the party does not want to extend the current Diet session beyond its scheduled July 17 close. ” Suzuki said efforts to revise the Imperial House Law, which includes measures to secure a sufficient number of Imperial Family members, must be completed during this session.
He added that agreed items in the coalition pact between the LDP and the Japan Innovation Party must be steadily implemented.
The remarks followed a Monday meeting in which Hiroshi Nakatsuka, secretary-general of the Japan Innovation Party, called for an extension to pass key bills, including one to reduce the number of House of Representatives seats.
