A prominent Lebanese politician close to Hezbollah called on President Trump on Monday to impose a new cease-fire in Lebanon. The politician said Hezbollah was open to a renewed truce and suggested that only the United States could press Israel to abide by one.

“No one can make a real cease-fire except for Trump,” said Nabih Berri, the speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, in an interview with The New York Times. Berri leads the Amal Movement, one of Lebanon’s two main Shiite political parties.

The comments came as the shaky truce between Hezbollah and Israel teetered on the brink of collapse. Both sides have continued attacks since the truce took effect in April, but fighting has sharply escalated over the past week. Israeli forces have pushed deeper into Lebanon beyond territory seized earlier in the war. Hezbollah has continued to attack Israeli troops and targets in northern Israel.

Trump said on Truth Social on Monday afternoon that he had spoken with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel and indirectly with Hezbollah. Neither side confirmed his assertion. Berri did not say whether he had spoken with President Trump after the interview.
