Lego Announces 12 New Pokémon Smart Brick Sets for August Release
Lego will release 12 new Pokémon-themed sets on August 1 that use Smart Bricks for training and battle functions. Two sets include the required bricks and charger; the remaining ten require separate purchase of Smart Bricks.
The VergeLego announced 12 new Pokémon sets that incorporate Smart Bricks for interactive play. The sets go on sale August 1 after preorders open today. Two sets contain at least one Smart Brick and charger. A $69.99 Pikachu set includes a treehouse and one Smart Brick; a $119.99 Charizard versus Jolteon set includes two Smart Bricks.
The other ten sets, priced from $14.99 to $89.99, contain Smart Tags that respond to Smart Bricks but do not include the bricks themselves.
Shaking two Smart Brick-equipped figures together starts Battle mode. A quick thrust triggers a low-damage attack, holding the figure charges a stronger move, and pulling it back dodges. After one to two minutes, one Pokémon wins and victory music plays.
Tapping a figure on a training tag activates training mode. Repeated taps against targets or in the air increase its temporary strength for the next battle. The boost ends when the Smart Brick is removed or its battery is depleted.
The Smart Bricks generate generic sounds and some type-specific effects such as lightning or water. They do not reproduce character names or signature cries from the Pokémon games or cartoons. Lego cited the bricks' runtime synthesizer and limited memory as constraints. The company also noted that names and sounds differ by language, preventing localized audio.
Set sizes range from 88 pieces for Jigglypuff to 831 pieces for an Umbreon versus Garchomp battle. Age ratings start at six years for simpler kits and 10+ for larger ones. Federico Begher, Lego's SVP of product and marketing development, said the four basic battle mechanics represent a deliberate balance between simplicity and engagement.
