The hearing was prompted by confirmed Ebola Virus Disease outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, along with surveillance alerts issued by the World Health Organization. Lawmakers cited concerns over Liberia's porous borders, informal migration routes, and high population movement as factors that could increase the risk of disease importation.
The Legislature is seeking updates on the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response platform, Early Warning Alert and Response System, Incident Management System, and Rapid Response Teams. Additional topics include emergency stockpiles of protective equipment, laboratory biosafety standards, genomic surveillance capacity, and coordination through the Emergency Operations Center.
Officials are also expected to discuss ongoing work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization under the International Health Regulations framework. The Ministry of Health has stated that Liberia currently has no suspected, probable, or confirmed Ebola cases.
