The 27-year-old musician said he has a bipolar disorder diagnosis, is receiving therapy and psychiatric care, and plans to release new music.
Lil Nas X posted a nearly three-minute video to Instagram on Wednesday morning in which he said he has been in rehab for a few months and has returned home to Atlanta and Los Angeles. The artist, born Montero Lamar Hill and now 27, stated that he has a therapist and a psychiatrist. He said he had known about his bipolar disorder diagnosis for the past few years but had not wanted to admit it.
“I have a therapist now and a psychiatrist, which has been really helpful,” Lil Nas X said in the video. ” He added that he is doing much better. “I’m feeling better. I’m creating freely. And there’s less fear in my heart,” he said.
Lil Nas X also said he has been doing music for seven years and that new music is on the way. “I love you and all I want to do is continue to try to make you proud and make myself proud,” he told fans. The update follows an August arrest in Los Angeles after police responded to a report of a naked man walking on a busy boulevard.
Authorities said Lil Nas X walked naked down a street in the San Fernando Valley and charged at officers. A criminal complaint states that three officers were hurt. Lil Nas X spent three days in jail and was released on $75,000 bail on the condition that he attend drug treatment.
He pleaded not guilty to three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer. In April, Judge Alan Schneider allowed Lil Nas X to enter a mental health diversion program. The program is intended to lead to the charges being dismissed if he sticks to the treatment program and obeys all laws for two years.
The court found the encounter with police was the result of his bipolar disorder and appeared to be an aberration. Lil Nas X is best known for the 2018 single “Old Town Road,” which spent a record 19 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won two Grammys.
His 2021 album “Montero” reached No. 2 on the Billboard album chart and was nominated for a Grammy for album of the year.
