Liverpool confirmed that head coach Arne Slot will leave the club with immediate effect. The Dutchman had led the team to the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season but could not repeat that result in 2025-26. The club finished the 2025-26 campaign in fifth place and recorded its lowest points total in a decade with 60 points.

Liverpool suffered 19 losses in all competitions and lost nine of 12 matches during one stretch of the season. Liverpool owners issued a joint statement on Saturday acknowledging the difficulty of the decision. The statement said the contribution Slot made to the club had been significant, meaningful and successful, yet the hierarchy concluded that change was necessary for the club to keep moving forward.

Slot was appointed head coach in May 2024 and replaced Jurgen Klopp that summer. He signed a three-year contract after managing Dutch side Feyenoord. The season was further complicated by injuries to key players, including striker Alexander Isak, who cost £125 million, and by the aftermath of Diogo Jota's death last July.

Sources told ESPN that Liverpool's hierarchy had continued to back Slot through the difficult period but determined that a managerial change offered the best chance of future success. The club is now searching for a successor and is targeting a more attack-minded, aggressive style of play.

One candidate linked with the role is Andoni Iraola, who will leave AFC Bournemouth after the expiration of his contract this summer.

Iraola guided Bournemouth to a sixth-placed finish in the Champions League.
