Local elections held on Thursday delivered sharp losses for the governing Labour Party and gains for the insurgent Reform U.K. party. Reform U.K. won more than 1,300 seats on municipal councils in England. Labour lost roughly 1,400 seats on local councils across England.
Left-leaning voters shifted support to the Green Party, the Liberal Democrats and independent candidates. In Wales, Labour lost control of the national parliament it had led since 1999. In Scotland, the Scottish National Party remained the largest party while Labour tied for second place with Reform.
The prime minister said the results reflected voter dissatisfaction. “The electorate are fed up with the fact that their lives aren’t changing quickly enough,” the prime minister said on Friday morning after initial results were announced. The prime minister added that he would not step down.

Reform U.K. positioned itself as an anti-immigration force on the right and has now established itself as a significant presence in local government. The combined shifts indicate voters are turning to smaller parties on both the right and left.
