A 25-year-old Long Island man was arraigned Thursday on second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and related charges in the December 2024 death of a 65-year-old amputee during a carjacking in Deer Park. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said the man yanked Donald Klune from his parked 2009 Mitsubishi, kicked him and left him injured on the ground.

Klune, who had one leg, was unable to call for help after the suspect took the car with the victim’s phone inside. A bystander found Klune in the road and called for help. Klune died two days later at Sound Shore University Hospital from blunt force injuries.

Police arrested the suspect on May 11 after a nearly two-year investigation. Officers found the stolen Mitsubishi in a commercial parking lot the day after the assault and located the victim’s car keys near the suspect after he was struck by another vehicle.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said in a statement that the defendant allegedly attacked Klune and left him for dead for nothing more than his car. The Suffolk County Police Department never gave up in our pursuit of justice for Mr. Klune and his loved ones, and my office will continue to do so during this prosecution.

The suspect’s lawyer, Andrew Karpf, said his client was not guilty but declined further comment until he reviewed case paperwork. Judge Karen Wilutis held the man in custody. His next court date is June 24. He could face at least 25 years in prison if convicted of the top charge.
