Los Angeles School Superintendent Resigns During Federal Probe

Alberto Carvalho resigned Sunday as superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, the nation’s second-largest system. The resignation came five months after federal agents served search warrants at his home and at district headquarters on February 25.
The warrants were executed in connection with a criminal inquiry into the district’s dealings with an artificial-intelligence start-up. Carvalho was placed on leave after the warrants became public. He denied any wrongdoing earlier this year and had asked to be reinstated.
District officials have not released details about the nature or scope of the federal investigation. The district serves more than 430,000 students across 780 schools. Carvalho had led the district since February 2022.
District officials announced that acting superintendent Andrés Chait will remain in the role until a permanent decision is made. The board stated its commitment to stability and continuity of leadership.
“I believe our schools must remain focused on students and learning without distraction. I am resigning as Superintendent of LAUSD effective today, June 21, 2026.”
Carvalho had previously served as superintendent of another large urban district for 14 years before arriving in Los Angeles.
