Former Love Island contestant Dr Alex George has revealed that two years ago he sat on the stairs in his flat and thought about ending his life. He said he felt agitated and out of control before deciding to go for a run, which he said lifted his mood enough to call a friend for help.

George made the remarks in a video posted on Instagram on Tuesday to mark Mental Health Awareness Week. He said he had never shared the story before and wanted to reduce shame and stigma around mental health challenges while giving people hope. In the video he said: "Two years ago, I sat on these stairs and thought about ending my life.

In fact, I wanted to end my life. I was so agitated that I was scared. " He said he then saw his dog Rolo at the bottom of the stairs and gave himself the option of either leaving or going for a run. The run lifted him just enough that when he returned he called a friend, and that phone call led to changes that mean he is still here today.

"That is how close it came and the thing I reflect on is that no-one would have had a clue, looking before or even after, the crossroads that I was at," he added.

Background and Message George, who grew up in Carmarthenshire and worked as an A&E doctor, appeared on Love Island in 2018. He became a mental health ambassador for the UK government in 2021. In the video he told followers "you are loved" and said bad days do come but better days are always on their way. The story contains discussion of suicide and suicidal feelings.
