A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Iwate Prefecture at around 7:30 a.m. on June 25, 2026. The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded a maximum seismic intensity of 6 upper in Aomori Prefecture and placed the epicenter at a depth of about 50 kilometers.
Strong shaking affected coastal Iwate and the Sannohe and Kamikita areas of Aomori. , while intensity 6 lower was measured in Hachinohe, where dishes fell and broke on floors. Household items were scattered indoors in Kuji.
The agency stated that slight sea-level changes are expected but will not cause tsunami damage, and nuclear facilities reported no issues. Residents were advised to check for broken glass before cleanup to avoid injuries. Seismic activity has increased in the region since autumn 2025.
A series of large quakes occurred off Sanriku in November 2025, followed by a magnitude 7.5 event off eastern Aomori on December 8 that also reached intensity 6 upper. Another magnitude 7.7 quake struck off Sanriku in April 2026. Aftershocks are expected to continue, and even smaller ones may produce noticeable shaking onshore because the epicenter lies closer to land than the December 2025 event.
