Magnitude 7.1 Quake Strikes Venezuela and Magnitude 5.6 Quake Hits Northern California on Same Day

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck near northern Venezuela and a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Mendocino County, California, both on June 24. The quake was felt across north-central Venezuela, including Caracas. The U.S.

Tsunami Warning Centers issued advisories for Puerto Rico and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, warning of possible hazardous waves within 300 kilometers of the epicenter. Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire were placed under tsunami threat.

Videos showed buildings with missing walls and dust covering neighborhoods in Caracas. Witnesses reported cracks on building exteriors and evacuations from structures as they shook. A separate magnitude 5.m.

Pacific Time on June 24. The U.S. Geological Survey placed the epicenter about seven miles north of Redwood Valley at a depth of roughly five miles. ShakeAlert notifications reached residents across Northern California.

Some injuries were reported, though no deaths occurred. Shaking was felt as far as Sacramento, and about 8,000 customers lost power near the epicenter. The National Tsunami Warning Center stated there was no tsunami threat from the California quake.

Crews continued damage assessments but had not identified major structural issues.
