A Democratic candidate for Maine governor is scheduled to campaign with Sen. Bernie Sanders on Sunday and Monday while presenting as a pro-choice candidate. State legislative records show the candidate received a 100% rating from Maine Right to Life, indicating votes consistent with pro-life positions.

2011 the candidate voted for a bill that would have affirmed personhood in the womb. In 2013 the candidate voted to advance counseling requirements for women considering an abortion. Both measures failed. In 2014 EMILY's List ran a six-figure television ad campaign against the candidate.

After the 2022 Dobbs decision, Maine passed expansions to abortion access that removed restrictions on late-term abortions. Planned Parenthood issued a press release praising the candidate and other legislators for the changes. As recently as October 2022 the candidate told local reporters of struggling with the issue.

Since declaring a gubernatorial candidacy last May the candidate has posted statements supporting reproductive freedom and opposing efforts to limit abortion rights. The candidate's campaign website does not list abortion access among top priorities.

Maine currently permits abortion at any stage with physician approval after viability. Sen. Bernie Sanders endorsed the candidate on Friday, describing the candidate as aligned with working-class interests and progressive priorities.
