Makhachev Comments After Opponent's Corner Stoppage

Islam Makhachev posted two messages on social media after Ilia Topuria's corner stopped a fight before the fifth round on Sunday night. The welterweight champion had been scheduled to face Topuria on a card promoted as the White House card before talks ended.

Each side attributed the breakdown to the other. Topuria stated that Makhachev withdrew, while Makhachev said Topuria set an asking price that ended the matchup.

Makhachev wrote that the corner stoppage gave him the final word. In one post he stated, "He who exalts himself will be humbled. " A second post followed shortly afterward. It read, "To quit in the biggest fight of your career — is something not everybody can do.

The corner stoppage marked the first time in his professional career that he did not continue. The event took place on the largest stage the organization has used and drew its largest reported audience. Makhachev, competing in the welterweight division, did not participate in the bout.

Topuria stated after the event that he plans to return stronger. Makhachev indicated he was not impressed by the performance.
