Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, ESPN reported. The club is set to trigger a £35 million release clause in the Belgian midfielder's contract. Tielemans has spent three years at Aston Villa and was a key part of the team that won the Europa League last season.
He scored twice for Belgium in a 3-2 World Cup round-of-32 win over Senegal. Villa are keen to keep the 29-year-old, but he has indicated a preference to move to Old Trafford. The potential signing would join Andrey Santos in Manchester United's summer midfield overhaul.
The club officially announced Santos's arrival on Monday for a fee in the region of £48 million plus £2 million in add-ons. Manchester United are not currently proceeding with a move for Atalanta midfielder Éderson. The clubs had agreed a £35 million fee before the World Cup, but the deal has stalled and the exact issue remains unclear.
Goalkeeper Karl Darlow is close to joining from Leeds United.
