Mark Hamill Apologizes for AI Image Showing President in Grave
The actor posted an AI-generated image on Bluesky showing the president in a shallow grave with the caption "If Only." The White House condemned the post as sick rhetoric linked to assassination attempts. Hamill deleted the image, replaced it with one of the president alive and issued an apology stating he wished the opposite of death.
cnbc.comActor Mark Hamill posted an AI-generated image on his verified Bluesky account that showed the president lying lifeless in an open grave ringed with flowers. The headstone in the image read "Donald J. Trump 1946-2024" with the words "If Only" superimposed across the photo.
The accompanying caption expressed a desire for the president to live long enough to witness his party's loss in the midterms, face accountability for corruption, be impeached, convicted, humiliated for crimes and ultimately disgraced in history books.
The White House responded on X by calling Hamill "one sick individual" and stating that such rhetoric had inspired three assassination attempts in two years against the president.
Thursday the actor had removed the image from his Bluesky profile. " "Actually, I was wishing him the opposite of dead, but apologize if you found the image inappropriate," Hamill wrote. A representative for the actor referred inquiries to that statement.
The backlash extended to conservative actors and commentators. " Another called Hamill a sick and demented disgrace to decent Americans while a senator mocked the scope of his acting career.
The controversy arose shortly after a shooting incident outside the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner last month. Authorities described that event as an attempt to assassinate the president. Following the shooting, the first lady and other officials called for the dismissal of a late-night host who had joked about her in a sketch days earlier.
The first lady described the comedian’s remarks as hateful and violent rhetoric intended to divide the country. The comedian rejected the criticism, saying the joke referred to the couple’s age difference and agreed that hateful rhetoric should be rejected on all sides.
The president was shot in the ear at a 2024 rally where the gunman was killed by the Secret Service. Later that year another man was found hiding in bushes with weapons near a golf course where the president was playing. In February a man was convicted of an attempted assassination and separately charged with assaulting a Secret Service officer.
“Actually, I was wishing him the opposite of dead, but apologize if you found the image inappropriate.”
The actor, known for playing Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars films beginning in 1977 and for voicing the Joker in various DC Comics projects, had voiced strong political opinions in the past but had not previously shared imagery of this nature.
