Mboko Retires From Singles With Knee Injury but Wins Doubles Opener With Serena Williams at Queen's Club
The 19-year-old Canadian retired after slipping and grabbing her left knee while trailing Karolina Pliskova. Serena Williams and Mboko had won their opening doubles match and are scheduled to play again Thursday.
Nbc SportsVictoria Mboko retired from her singles match against Karolina Pliskova at Queen's Club on Wednesday after sustaining a left knee injury. The 19-year-old Canadian slipped behind the baseline and immediately grabbed her left knee while facing Pliskova. She lost the first set 6-2 and was up 4-3 in the second set, trying to break with Pliskova serving at deuce, when the injury occurred.
She walked gingerly to her bench and put a towel to her face as she sat down. Minutes later, she retired from the match. Serena Williams, 44, and Mboko had won their opening doubles match at the tournament.
Williams is returning to professional tennis nearly four years after her previous matches. The pair is scheduled to play their next doubles match on Thursday. Williams previously announced she will also play doubles at the Berlin Open.
