McConnell Remains Hospitalized Nearly One Month; Office Says He Continues to Improve

The statement added that McConnell appreciates the outpouring of support and is working with staff on Kentucky and Senate matters while the Senate is out of session. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear sent a letter to McConnell's office on Wednesday urging transparency about the senator's health and ability to hold office. Beshear cited growing public concerns.

Emergency calls placed from McConnell's home on 14 June requested help for an unconscious person suffering cardiac arrest, with CPR underway. McConnell was not named in the recordings. A video circulated showing a person on a stretcher being loaded into an ambulance outside the home that morning.

A neighbor told CNN the street was blocked and police confirmed only a medical emergency; an eyewitness told the neighbor the patient was McConnell. Several Republicans, including commentator Scott Jennings, said they spoke by phone with McConnell on Tuesday. A spokesman for Senate Leader John Thune described a lengthy conversation covering national security and other topics.

Influencer Laura Loomer posted on X that McConnell was in a vegetative state and brain dead, alleging a cover-up. She also criticized his wife, Elaine Chao, for traveling to China. The Chinese government confirmed Chao met Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing on 17 June.

Chao's spokesperson said McConnell's health did not warrant an immediate return and the trip had been long planned for family philanthropic work. McConnell previously announced he would not seek re-election when his term ends in January 2027. Republican Andy Barr will face Democrat Charles Booker in the November election for the seat.
