Rory McIlroy finished the Open Championship at 1-under-par 279, nine shots behind champion Ryan Fox of New Zealand. McIlroy led the field in strokes gained off the tee at 7.98 and in driving distance at 339.3 yards. He posted a 1-over-par 71 in the final round after a three-birdie, four-bogey performance.
"I just sort of stuck in neutral for most of the week," McIlroy said. He said the change improved accuracy after earlier struggles to keep the ball in play. He noted that changes at Royal Birkdale raised the greens and reduced run-up options compared with the 2017 Open, when he tied for fourth.
McIlroy said he plans a holiday with his wife and daughter before resuming competition. He will divide his schedule between the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup and the DP World Tour, including the Irish Open in mid-September.
