Mel Brooks, born Melvin Kaminsky in Brooklyn on June 28, 1926, reaches his 100th birthday this week. He served in the Army during World War II, performed in the Borscht Belt, and later wrote for Sid Caesar’s variety program. Brooks met Carl Reiner while working on that show, and the pair created the recurring “2000 Year Old Man” comedy sketches.
In a 2021 interview with The Associated Press, Brooks said his childhood in Williamsburg remained the happiest period of his life.
April, Brooks recorded a video message honoring Eddie Murphy at the AFI Life Achievement Award ceremony. In May, he announced the donation of thousands of documents and photographs to the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York. Brooks has addressed mortality in his work, including a 1980s sketch featuring a coin-operated gravestone that played a recorded message.
In the same 2021 interview, he said he stopped thinking about death after age 60. “I enjoy living,” he added.
