Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the VLE, a battery-electric high-riding limousine that seats up to eight and draws on roots in the V-Class van. The vehicle targets VIP customers, utilizing technology and appointments from the company's newest models. Newsweek reported that Thomas Klein, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, stated, “We are really entering a new era with the VLE,” adding that the company is “launching the VLE and redefining a whole segment, what you call grand limousines...

He expressed confidence in its appeal, stating, “I'm truly convinced people value space of their own, value pristine interiors, value great driving abilities, and, at least in Europe, we see that they are very much ready to go electric when there's little compromises to make.

The vans division represented 17 percent of Mercedes-Benz's annual sales in 2025 and produced return on sales results above guidance in Q1 2026. Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce the Mercedes-Maybach GLS as the vans flagship, an ultra-luxury grand limousine.

Both the VLE and Mercedes-Maybach GLS are targeted at China more than Europe and North America, with the Middle East expected to play a pivotal role in their success. The company also plans to introduce gas-powered versions of its vans to meet market demands. Significant investments support these initiatives, including more than one billion euros into a plant in Spain for the VLE.

Mercedes-Benz is converting a previous power plant in Poland for expansion to build commercial vehicle versions of the VLE architecture and upgrading facilities in Germany. Ola Källenius, chairman of the board of management and CEO of the Mercedes-Benz Group, stated, “I don't think we have ever done a bigger play in Europe.

Mercedes-Benz recently launched the V-Class in India, one of its key emerging markets.

These efforts build on the vans division's performance, with Källenius noting the potential in regions with demand for upper-end people movers. Newsweek reported that the investments and new models position the division for growth in both electric and gas-powered segments.
