Meta is introducing a new Limited Content setting that restricts repeated exposure to topics such as weightlifting, nutrition and anxiety coping strategies for teen users. The move follows two recent court losses in child-safety cases and expands existing Teen Account protections to Instagram, Facebook and Messenger worldwide.
The HillMeta announced Tuesday that it will roll out a Limited Content setting for users under 18 on Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. The feature will restrict repeated display of certain topics, including posts about weightlifting, nutrition and anxiety coping strategies, across Explore, Feed and Reels pages.
" The setting forms part of an expansion of Teen Account controls first introduced in 2024.
Accounts remain private by default.
Users under 18 must manually approve new followers and can only be messaged, tagged or mentioned by accounts they already follow. The platform also hides material it deems inappropriate and blocks links to such material or chats with accounts that primarily share it.
The changes apply globally and coincide with ongoing legal proceedings. A New Mexico jury last month found Meta liable for violating the state’s Unfair Practices Act and ordered the company to pay $375 million in damages.
A bench trial began Monday to consider additional protections sought by the New Mexico attorney general for users under 18. In a separate case, a jury also held Meta and YouTube negligent in platform design or operation affecting minors. Meta said it has added artificial-intelligence tools to detect and remove accounts belonging to children under 13.
The company is also working with the AI safety assessment firm Alice to evaluate its Teen Account settings.
