Meta has rolled out a new feature allowing parents to view topics their teens discuss with Meta AI on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. The update includes categorized insights and is initially available in select countries. It follows earlier suspensions and previews aimed at enhancing teen safety with AI tools.
ndtv.comMeta announced on Thursday that parents using its supervision tools can now access insights into the topics their teens have queried Meta AI about over the past week on Facebook, Messenger, or Instagram. A new 'Insights' tab in the supervision hub displays these topics, which include categories such as 'School,' 'Entertainment,' 'Lifestyle,' 'Travel,' 'Writing,' and 'Health and Wellbeing,' among others.
Parents can explore subcategories within these topics, with 'Lifestyle' encompassing fashion, food, and holidays, while 'Health and Wellbeing' includes fitness, physical health, and mental health.
Australia, Canada, and Brazil, with a global rollout planned for the coming weeks. Meta first previewed these insights in October, stating at the time that it was developing new tools to assist parents in guiding their teens' interactions with AI. In January, Meta suspended teens' access to its AI characters across all apps worldwide, announcing plans to create an updated version tailored specifically for teens.
Meta AI characters function as interactive personas with unique personalities, allowing users to engage with them as if they were real individuals in roles like a chef or as celebrities such as Snoop Dogg and Paris Hilton. The suspension occurred just days before a lawsuit against Meta went to trial in New Mexico, where the company was accused of failing to protect minors on its platforms.
Meta lost the New Mexico lawsuit, becoming the first instance where a court held the company legally liable for endangering child safety.
On Wednesday, Meta announced it is providing parents with suggested conversation starters to facilitate open, non-judgmental discussions about their teens' AI experiences. Meta is also launching a new AI Wellbeing Expert Council to influence the development of its AI products for teens.
TechCrunch reported that these updates build on Meta's earlier efforts, including the October preview of tools that would have enabled parents to block or disable specific AI characters for teens.
