Meta to Lease Capacity at 168 MW Reliance AI Data Center in Jamnagar, Gujarat
Meta will lease capacity at the Reliance-built facility, which is scheduled for completion within two years and will run on renewable power.
CnbcMeta and Reliance Industries will build a 168-megawatt AI data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, under a partnership announced on Wednesday. The facility will support Meta’s global AI computing needs and can be expanded over time. Reliance said the center will be ready within two years.
Meta will lease capacity at the site. Reliance will handle design, construction, renewable power supply, connectivity, and operations. The companies said the data center will be powered by renewable energy and cooled with desalinated seawater.
Meta will pay the full cost of the energy and water used for its operations. Meta separately contracted nearly 1 gigawatt of new renewable energy capacity in India through agreements with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy. The partnership builds on earlier collaboration.
Meta invested $7 billion in Reliance’s Jio Platforms in 2020 and launched a $100 million joint venture last year to develop enterprise AI solutions for customers in India and overseas markets. India added 5 gigawatts of data center capacity in 2025, according to government data. Industry estimates project growth to more than 8 gigawatts by the end of the decade.
New Delhi offers tax exemptions through 2047 for foreign cloud providers on services sold overseas when workloads run from Indian data centers. Blackstone-backed AirTrunk announced plans this week to invest $30 billion to build 5 gigawatts of data center capacity in India by 2030.
Microsoft, Amazon, Google, OpenAI, and Uber have also announced AI and cloud infrastructure investments in the country.
Adani and Tata Consultancy Services have unveiled their own data center expansion plans. The companies did not disclose the value of the Jamnagar agreement, the type of AI workloads that will run at the facility, or whether Meta plans further AI infrastructure investments in India.
