Mets Infielder Vientos to Miss Six to Eight Weeks After Hand Fracture
New York Mets infielder Mark Vientos sustained a fractured right hand after being hit by a pitch on July 10. He will miss six to eight weeks but does not require surgery. Pitcher Clay Holmes threw live batting practice the next day while recovering from a leg injury.

New York Mets infielder Mark Vientos will miss six to eight weeks after fracturing his right hand but will not need surgery, with Eric Wagaman expected to take most of his playing time. The injury occurred when he was struck by a 92 mph fastball from Kansas City Royals pitcher Michael Wacha in the second inning of the Mets' 7-3 win on July 10.
Vientos remained in the game to run the bases before exiting.
On July 11 Vientos said the hand began throbbing at first base and felt numb. "It started to be kind of a little bit numb. It was a painful feeling," he said. Vientos is wearing a cast on his right hand and wrist and stated he will not need surgery.
The start against the Royals was Vientos' first appearance against a right-handed pitcher since June. 211 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI in 73 games this season. Manager Andy Green said right-handed hitter Eric Wagaman would likely receive much of Vientos' playing time.
Clay Holmes threw a 40-pitch live batting practice session on July 11 as he recovers from a broken right leg suffered on May 15 after being hit by a 111.1 mph comebacker from New York Yankees batter Spencer Jones. Injured second baseman Marcus Semien participated in the session. Manager Andy Green stated on July 11 that it remains too early to determine when Holmes might begin a rehab assignment.
Holmes went 4-4 with a 2.39 ERA in nine starts before his May 15 injury. Holmes holds a player option for the 2027 season. The Mets are in last place as of July 2026.
