Mets prospect Zach Thornton scheduled for Sunday appearance

Zach Thornton will pitch for the Mets in Sunday’s series finale, either as a starter or bulk reliever, interim manager Andy Green said. The 24-year-old has made two appearances this season. He allowed four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings in his first outing and gave up one run over six innings in his second.

Thornton has posted a 4.02 ERA across 62 2/3 innings and 13 starts at Triple-A Syracuse. He has allowed three earned runs over his past 13 2/3 innings while striking out 16 batters. Green said Thornton has shown the traits the team values. “He’s unafraid, he’s going to give you what he’s got,” Green said before Saturday’s game.

Outlook after All-Star break It remains uncertain whether Thornton will stay with the team after the All-Star break. The Mets need a fifth starter following the departures of Nolan McLean, Freddy Peralta, Christian Scott and Sean Manaea. Green added that Thornton is expected to remain aggressive and attack the strike zone. Thornton is rated the team’s No. 12 prospect by MLB.com.
