Mets Start Three Rookies in Outfield for First Time

The New York Mets started three rookies in the outfield for the first time during Game 51 on May 22, 2026. The lineup featured Carson Benge, A.J. Ewing and Nick Morabito. The trio had never started together at any professional level before this game.

The group went 1-for-9 at the plate.

Ewing recorded the only hit among the three. Morabito made a diving catch in left field that prevented a run in the fifth inning.

The Mets have placed Francisco Lindor, Jorge Polanco and Luis Robert Jr. on the injured list for the long term. Benge opened the season with the team. Ewing joined the roster about 10 days earlier. Morabito received a promotion in the days before the game.

Mendoza said before the game that the arrangement was unexpected. "I don’t think anybody did," Mendoza said. " A teammate stated that the rookies possess strong baseball skills and mental composure. The same teammate noted that the players appear unfazed by major-league pressure.

Mendoza can now use Juan Soto as the designated hitter because the three rookies provide additional outfield options.
