Argentina and Spain will contest the 2026 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The two sides are the last teams standing after 46 others were eliminated, including co-hosts Canada, Mexico and the United States along with Brazil and Germany. Argentina reached the final with a late comeback against England in the semifinals.
The reigning world champions had earlier needed extra time to defeat Cape Verde 3-2 in the round of 32, then beat Egypt 3-2 in the round of 16 and Switzerland in the quarterfinals after a red card to Breel Embolo. Spain advanced with a 2-0 semifinal win over France in Dallas.
The European champions opened the tournament with a 0-0 draw against Cape Verde and conceded their only goal of the competition during a 2-1 quarterfinal victory over Belgium.
Mikel Oyarzabal has scored five goals for Spain, including three in the knockout rounds. Pedro Porro added a goal in the semifinal against France. Lionel Messi has scored eight goals for Argentina and shares the Golden Boot lead with Kylian Mbappé.
