Mexican man with diabetes and hypertension dies in ICE custody at Adelanto center

ICE records show Ramos's diabetes and hypertension were documented on arrival. He had taken daily medication for both conditions before detention. m.
The day he died. According to an ICE press release, staff found Ramos unresponsive in his bunk and attempted resuscitation before he was taken to a nearby medical center. The Ramos family alleges GEO Group, the private operator of Adelanto, ignored the emergency and delayed transport to a hospital.
Other detainees noticed Ramos's worsening condition but were not permitted to help, Tovar said. Ramos told Tovar that his clothes smelled unwashed and his diet was meagre. His family sent money so he could order additional food.
A lawsuit filed in January described mold on Adelanto's walls, insufficient medical care, and rampant illness. At least 32 people died in ICE custody in 2025, compared with 11 in 2024. ICE's website reports 19 in-custody deaths in 2026 so far.
