Mexico City's government announced on June 23 that it will ban alcohol sales in supermarkets and grocery stores from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning during the national team's World Cup match against Czechia. Le Monde reported that the prohibition applies only to retail outlets, while consumption remains permitted inside restaurants and bars.
The decision follows celebrations on June 18 after Mexico defeated South Korea, when roughly 400,000 fans gathered at the Angel of Independence on Reforma Avenue and another 200,000 assembled in the Zocalo square outside the presidential palace.
Mayor Clara Brugada stated on June 19 that the government would seek to prevent alcohol consumption on the street during the next game. City cleaning crews collected 40 tons of garbage after the June 18 events, according to officials. Mexico's final group-phase match against Czechia is scheduled for 7 p.m.
