Raúl Jiménez scored Mexico’s second goal with a header in the 67th minute of the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s opening match at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The goal came from a cross by Roberto Alvarado and gave Mexico three points, placing the team at the top of Group A. Jiménez pointed to the sky after the goal in tribute to his father, Raúl Jiménez Vega, who died in March.
His family responded from the stands with heart-shaped gestures. “It was always his dream to see me score in a World Cup,” Jiménez stated. Jiménez overcame a skull fracture sustained in a 2020 English Premier League match after a clash of heads with David Luiz.
He is now the second-highest Mexican goal scorer in history, behind only Javier Hernández.
