Warde Manuel stated he does not know his status two days before the university Board of Regents receives findings from an internal athletics department investigation. He said he continues daily operations while awaiting decisions on the report.
CBS SportsMichigan athletic director Warde Manuel said Tuesday he is uncertain about his future two days before the university Board of Regents is scheduled to receive results of an internal investigation into the athletics department culture. Manuel told The Michigan Insider he has not seen the report and cannot predict when or how any decisions will be announced.
He added that the uncertainty has not affected his work to support department operations. The investigation expanded from an earlier review tied to former football coach Sherrone Moore, who was fired December 10 after evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate staff member surfaced.
Moore was later arrested, charged with felony home invasion, stalking and breaking and entering, and pleaded no contest to misdemeanor counts of malicious use of a telecommunications device and trespassing.
Contract and prior statements Manuel, who has served as athletic director since 2016, said he has held several conversations over the past six or seven months about his contract, which has four years remaining, and possible buyout options. " On Tuesday he clarified that statement was made to calm speculation and that he does not know what will happen after the regents meeting.
A source told CBS Sports that Manuel is weighing options that could include retirement. University president Domenico Grasso confirmed the investigation covers culture, conduct and procedures throughout the athletics department. Manuel said he will leave release decisions about the report to the president.
