Major League Baseball owners have formally proposed a salary cap for the first time since 1994, Fox News reported. The current collective bargaining agreement expires in December 2026. Players have stated that a salary cap is nonnegotiable.
The 1994 postseason was canceled due to a players' strike, and the 1995 season was reduced to 144 games as the strike extended into that year. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred spoke to reporters ahead of Tuesday's All-Star Game. He said it would be "wildly, wildly inappropriate" for him to speculate what President Trump might do in a hypothetical situation.
Manfred stated that President Trump is "interested" in the negotiations. Last month President Trump said it is "shocking" that MLB does not have a salary cap. "If you don't have a salary cap, you don't have a sport," Trump stated.
"Football has a salary cap. They should have done it a long time ago. " Baseball has seen increased attendance in recent years after rule changes implemented by Manfred shortened game times. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
