Michigan Governor Says She Will Not Run for President in 2028

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer told a reporter on Thursday that she will not run for president in 2028. "There will be a robust group of people running for president," the term-limited governor said. "I will not be one of them in 2028. " Whitmer, elected in 2018, previously served as a state representative, state senator, and Ingham County prosecuting attorney.

She gained national attention during the prior presidential term as an outspoken critic of the administration and delivered the Democratic response to the 2020 State of the Union address.

The governor appeared at the White House in April of last year for a private meeting on Michigan issues. Photographs showing her holding a folder in front of her face during a subsequent news conference circulated widely. Whitmer later said she did not want photographs taken and remained in the room to advocate for her state despite disagreeing with much of what was said.

2028 Contenders A list of other Democrats viewed as possible 2028 candidates includes former Vice President Kamala Harris, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and several sitting governors and members of Congress. Wes Moore has similarly stated he will not run in 2028.
