Two-term Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer stated on Thursday that she will not seek the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. The announcement ends speculation about her possible candidacy.

" Whitmer, elected in 2018, previously served as a state representative, state senator, and Ingham County prosecuting attorney.
She gained national attention during the prior presidential term as an outspoken critic of the administration and delivered the Democratic response to the 2020 State of the Union address.
The governor appeared at the White House in April of last year for a private meeting on Michigan issues. Photographs showing her holding a folder in front of her face during a subsequent news conference circulated widely. Whitmer later said she did not want photographs taken and remained in the room to advocate for her state despite disagreeing with much of what was said.
2028 Contenders A list of other Democrats viewed as possible 2028 candidates includes former Vice President Kamala Harris, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and several sitting governors and members of Congress. Wes Moore has similarly stated he will not run in 2028.
