Jacob Andreou was elevated to executive vice president of the AI product in March. Fortune reported that the 33-year-old executive led development of an autonomous agent tool completed in two months.
FortuneJacob Andreou was promoted by Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella to executive vice president overseeing Copilot in March after one year at the company. Fortune reported that Andreou, 33, had been hands-on with developers to release Copilot Tasks, an autonomous AI agent tool completed in about two months.
The tool successfully ordered a McDonald’s cheeseburger to Andreou’s apartment across from Microsoft’s Silicon Valley campus by the time he arrived home.
Andreou now oversees more than 11,000 people and is eliminating extraneous Copilot versions while merging consumer and enterprise teams. He introduced a consumption-based model for Copilot Cowork that bills by usage factors such as model use and runtime, though it still requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
England’s National Health Service rolled out Microsoft 365 Copilot to more than 500,000 staff, Nadella posted on X this month.
Microsoft’s shares are down double-digits in the past year, and only about 4.5 percent of its 450 million Microsoft 365 customers pay for Copilot features. Andreou stated that the current environment requires focus and urgency because technology moves too quickly for traditional six-to-twelve-month roadmaps.
He listed his top objectives as delivering a superior AI chat product, achieving leading model quality without delay, and providing trusted integration of various models.
Andreou previously led product at Snap, where he worked with Chief Executive Evan Spiegel on daily active users and advertising strategy, then joined Greylock as a partner in 2023 before Microsoft recruited him in 2025. He grew up near Vancouver, attended Queen’s University in Ontario, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biomedical computing.
In 2020 he married former Entertainment Tonight host Carly Steel at Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church.
Current and former employees said some teams now work 12-hour days under the new culture that favors so-called 10x developers. Andreou said building world-class AI products requires periods of surge but must remain sustainable, such as intense work Monday through Thursday with Friday off.
At a March meeting of roughly 80 developers, Mustafa Suleyman told staff that the future of software development means fewer people working harder by leveraging AI agents.
At its Build conference earlier this month, Microsoft unveiled new AI models and teased a purpose-built agentic platform for devices including a desktop and wearable badge. Andreou stated that the moment represents human empowerment because daily users feel more productive and capable.
