Yamashita, who is 24 and 4 feet 11 inches tall, entered the final round five strokes behind third-round leader Jing Yan and four behind Lottie Woad. She shot an 8-under-par 64 to finish regulation at 17-under-par 271.
Woad, 22 and English, closed with a 68 that included a bunker birdie on the 17th hole. On the 467-yard 18th, her 3-foot par putt lipped out, sending the tournament into extra holes. Both players reached the green in two shots in the playoff.
Yamashita hit a flop shot to 3 feet and made the putt for birdie. Woad's pitch finished 10 feet past the hole, and she missed the comeback attempt. Yamashita birdied the par-5 18th in regulation and again in the playoff.
She said she did not think about winning during the round. "I didn't think about like win today," Yamashita said. "I just focused on playing just like every round. " She added that the playoff was unexpected.
"I really didn't expect like it's going to be playoff, but once it did, I was able to reset mentally and focus on the task at hand," Yamashita said. " Woad said of her missed putt at the end of regulation, "Felt like I hit an OK putt. " Yamashita now has three LPGA Tour wins.
She also has 13 victories on the JLPGA Tour, including the Maybank Championship and the Women's British Open in 2025, and was named LPGA rookie of the year that season. Wei-Ling Hsu and Yan Liu each shot 67 to tie for third at 15-under-par. Minji Kang shot 66 and Cassie Porter shot 70, both finishing at 14-under-par.
Jing Yan shot 73 and tied for seventh at 13-under-par. The KPMG Women's PGA Championship begins Thursday at Hazeltine in Minnesota.
