Motherhood Index 2026: 61% of Mothers Rate Well-Being Good Despite 93% Reporting Burnout

The annual survey of 4,000 mothers shows widespread sleep deprivation, career disruption, and identity change. Peanut released the findings on June 4, 2026.

The Motherhood Index 2026, released June 4, found that 93 percent of mothers experience burnout even as 61 percent describe their well-being as good. The survey of 4,000 mothers also reported that 70 percent get fewer than five hours of unbroken sleep per night and that nearly half needed mental or physical health support last year they did not adequately receive.

Forty-seven percent of mothers have scaled back, paused, or left their careers.

Posts about loneliness and isolation on Peanut's platform rose 58 percent year-over-year, while political discussion increased 165 percent month-over-month. Ninety-three percent of mothers report a meaningful identity change since becoming a mother, and 59 percent feel like a completely different person. Only 2 percent say nothing has changed.

Sixty-seven percent of mothers in the survey have never heard the word matrescence, which describes the physical, neurological, and emotional transformation of becoming a mother. S. dictionary.

In February 2026, Peanut and Tommee Tippee launched a campaign to add the word to dictionaries and autocorrect systems at Apple, Google, and Microsoft. The effort began with a full-page New York Times advertisement styled as a dictionary entry under the headline "IDGAF is in the dictionary.

" Within a month the petition collected more than 11,000 signatures and Google searches for the term rose 5,000 percent.

Nicola Wallace, head of Global Brand Communications at Tommee Tippee, said, "Recognizing matrescence gives mothers the language to name the profound transformation of becoming a mother. " Peanut launched the Ask Peanut feature in April 2026. Since February 2025 the platform has recorded a 2,041 percent increase in women using ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude for health and parenting answers and then posting those answers to the community for validation.

References to AI tools in community conversations rose 1,088 percent year-over-year. Researchers evaluating 13 leading AI models on women's health tasks found failure rates of approximately 60 percent. Seventy-five percent of mothers trust peer recommendations above all other sources.

Its community data has supported policy advocacy to UK Parliament on Black maternal mortality rates and engagement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on vaccination outreach timing. Forty-three percent of mothers say their greatest source of optimism is stronger motherhood communities.

Peanut reached profitability without planning to raise additional capital; its last formal valuation was in 2021. m. with a sick child.
