Mozilla Releases First Report on Open-Source AI Capabilities

Mozilla released its first state of open-source AI report on Tuesday, Time reported. The document states that open-source models trail closed models by 3.3 percent in overall capabilities while reaching parity on coding tasks and lagging on reasoning. Time viewed the report exclusively ahead of publication.

It argues that open-source AI has nearly caught up to closed systems and calls for greater investment across ecosystem layers beyond the models themselves, including harnesses that amplify model abilities. Raffi Krikorian, Mozilla's chief technology officer, said he does not want seven AGIs controlled by major companies.

He added that individuals should each have an AGI on their own side rather than someone else's.

The report acknowledges that the 3.3 percent figure masks a jagged frontier in which closed models outperform open ones in key domains. It also notes that open models remain behind closed models on reasoning. An AI detection tool flagged Krikorian's foreword as 100 percent AI-generated.

Krikorian stated that he wrote the foreword himself, though an editor may have used AI to edit it. Krikorian said Mozilla plans to release its own harness within months. Mark Surman, Mozilla's president, described the organization's effort as building a Rebel Alliance to counter centralized, winner-takes-all technology controlled by a number of companies.
