winnipegfreepress.comPrime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi welcomed the Trump administration's move from aid-centered engagement to trade and investment during celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi on July 1. Mudavadi said the change supports more balanced relations.
"It is encouraging that the United States is redefining its commercial diplomacy with Africa from one based on aid and dependency to one anchored in trade, investment and mutually beneficial partnerships," he stated. He added that Kenya looks forward to concluding a bilateral trade agreement.
Mudavadi outlined areas for deeper cooperation including manufacturing, energy diversification, the creative economy, digital technology, security and collaborative research.
He noted ongoing strong ties built on democratic governance, the rule of law, human rights, anti-corruption efforts and cooperation in health, security and trade. He reaffirmed Kenya's commitment to free, fair and credible elections in 2027. The 2026 national budget increased funding for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to support voter registration and education.
Mudavadi called for stronger international backing of African Union-led peace initiatives and conveyed President William Ruto's congratulations to President Donald Trump and the American people on the anniversary. Chargé d'Affaires Susan Burns said the United States seeks to deepen the partnership through innovation, private sector investment and democratic values.
She highlighted Kenya's role as an innovation hub with successes such as M-Pesa and leadership in artificial intelligence, financial technology, clean energy, healthcare and agricultural innovation.
Burns noted that Google, Microsoft, Cisco, Meta, IBM, Oracle and Amazon are expanding operations in Kenya. Burns said the partnership rests on shared values including freedom of expression, freedom of worship and press freedom. "We're celebrating more than America's 250th anniversary.
Our theme tonight is celebrating the spirit of innovation, partnership and possibility that connects the United States and Kenya," she said. She added that a vibrant private sector drives growth and that Kenya's youthful population and entrepreneurial culture are key strengths. AllAfrica reported the remarks from the Capital FM account of the event.
