Fourth-inning outburst With the score tied 1-1, the Nationals opened the fourth with five consecutive hits against Emerson Hancock. Keibert Ruiz delivered the go-ahead single, Daylen Lile added an RBI double, and Nasim Nuñez drove in two runs. Nuñez advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw and scored on a ground ball to make the score 6-1.
Hancock allowed six runs in four innings and struck out two. It was the first time the right-hander failed to complete five innings in 14 starts this season.
Early scoring and injuries Seattle took a 1-0 lead in the first when Cole Young singled, advanced on Josh Naylor’s double, and scored after a misplay in center field. James Wood led off the bottom of the first with a home run to right field. Naylor fouled a ball off his right shin in the sixth and left the game.
X-rays were negative. Seattle closer Andrés Muñoz faced two batters in the eighth before exiting with lower-back tightness and is listed as day to day. Seattle has lost four of five games and finished its road trip 4-6.
