Navy Sets One-Year Treatment Limit for Shaving Conditions Before Separation Review

The Navy issued a July directive that requires sailors with shaving-related medical conditions to seek treatment and sets a one-year limit before commanders must recommend administrative separation. Washington Examiner reported the new guidelines apply to both active-duty and reserve personnel. Under the directive, all sailors experiencing skin irritation must obtain a medical evaluation.
Commanders may then issue 90-day medical shaving waivers, which can be renewed up to four consecutive times. If the condition does not improve within one year, separation proceedings begin for noncompliance with grooming standards. ” Religious accommodation grooming standards remain exempt from the new requirements.
Pseudofolliculitis barbae, commonly known as razor bumps, causes painful inflammation after shaving and disproportionately affects up to 60 percent of Black men, Stars and Stripes reported. The policy aligns with a department-wide review of fitness and grooming standards ordered last year by War Secretary Pete Hegseth.
