NBA commissioner says investigation into player contract must finish before next season

NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Tuesday the investigation into alleged salary cap circumvention must conclude before the start of next season. Silver addressed reporters after a meeting of the NBA's board of governors in Las Vegas. He stated he remained "hopeful" the probe would wrap up "this summer," while noting it has already lasted longer than expected.

The league instructed a law firm in September to examine whether a team funneled money to a player through an endorsement deal with a now-bankrupt company. The same company held a separate $300 million, 23-year endorsement agreement with the team.

Trade on hold A reported trade sending the seven-time All-Star forward to another team was placed on hold last week until the investigation concludes. The team acquiring the player would assume risk of potential penalties tied to the contract. Silver said the league did not pause the trade.

The parties involved decided not to proceed while the investigation remained open. If the probe finds the player violated salary cap rules, the league could void the contract or fine the player up to $350,000.

Second apron rules Silver also addressed the league's "second apron" spending restrictions. The National Basketball Players Association has called for the rules to be softened or removed. Silver said the system is "working incredibly well" and could be revisited in future labor talks.

He pointed to the 2026 NBA Finals matchup between a large-market team and a small-market team as evidence the rules are creating broader competition.

Expansion update The board of governors heard presentations this week on potential expansion to Las Vegas and Seattle. Silver said multiple ownership groups in Las Vegas are presenting plans to the league's bankers. The commissioner stated the ownership selection process remains on track to conclude by year end. The league has targeted the 2028-29 season for any new teams to begin play.
